UNIVERSITY of Technology is the winner of the 2017 Vice Chancellor’s
Cup Challenge held at the PNG University of Natural Resources 7 Environment
last week.
Unitech Spartans defeated University of Goroka 30-4 in the play off for
first and second placing on Friday, to win the cup.
Divine Word University came third in the competition after defeating
UNRE 2 14-0.
President of PNG Universities Sports Association Harry Chapau described
the competition as tough.
He said the VC Cup Challenge had revealed that there were some very
good players and urged selectors of National Rugby League to attend such
competitions to recruit potential players with raw talent.
Mr Chapau commended the host University (UNRE) for a well organised
event and the other three universities: Unitech, UOG, and Divine Word for their
participation.
He said despite a lack of financial support from sponsors, UNRE
Administration had contributed a lot to the event.
Mr Chapau also acknowledged and thanked UNRE Vice Chancellor Professor
John Warren who was at the field during most of the competition and other
senior officers from the three universities.
UOG will host the next VC Cup meet in 2019.
Many visiting students said they found the UNRE environment to be
welcoming.
Stonney Yak, a final year student from Unitech said: “The place is very
welcoming and peaceful. I felt free and cool. There is a nice community
surrounding. The mess was fine. All in all it was very enjoyable week.”
Rylie Peter, also a Unitech Student said: “As a first timer in UNRE, it
has been a wonderful experience. I have enjoyed everything. The place is
beautiful with friendly people and environment. It will be a memory that I will
treasure. Thank you very much for being part of a memory that I will never
forget.”
Chairman of the Host Organising Committee Dr Aisak Pue thanked all the
participating universities for a trouble free competition.
“The game was played hard, everybody put themselves in the game and
they all made best of it,” he said.
He said it was a successful three days tournament and thanked all
coaches, Mr Chapau and all the other officials that travelled with the teams.
“This is the kind of thing the young people need. They learnt a lot
from one and other and in such events we can progress as universities,” said Dr
Pue.
UNRE Sports coordinator Paul Kentare thanked everyone who contributed
towards making the competition a success, particularly Digicel PNG for goalpost
pads, tryline flags, etc; Pacific Industries for the use of two 1000l water
containers that the players used; Brian Bell Ltd for balls and sporting
equipment; and Gazelle MP and Police Minister Jelta Wong for donating K500.
