University Council endorses PNG UNRE Development Plan 2018-2022

THE PNG UNRE Council has approved the University’s Development Plan 2018-2022. The Plan has identified six key Strategic Development Areas which will transform the way the University delivers on its commitments to quality academic and research programmes; and its community extension services. The six areas are: Academic Schools; Centre For Graduate Studies & Research; Community Outreach & Extension Services; Academic Support Services; Planning & Development; and Staff & Students Support Services. Various projects under these development areas have been identified and a workshop is being conducted by the Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation Office to introduce section heads to the concept of project scoping and to identify project working teams to scope and develop the projects. Eastern Highlands Provincial Government to sponsor tertiary students

Eastern Highlands Province is one of the few provinces willing to support students taking up studies both in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The announcement was made by Solomon Tato First Secretary to the Governor’s Office during his visit to UNRE on Wednesday. Mr Tato told students that they will not go wrong studying Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry and other related courses because there is demand in the province as well as the country. He said human resource capacity building is vital to the country’s development and Eastern Highlands Governor Honourable Peter Numu has made a commitment to support students to pursue their studies.   He said his visit was purposely to collect names of registered students and introduce to students the new education initiative the province will introduce next year. DJAG presents cheque to kick-start crime prevention program

THE Department of Justice & Attorney General presented a cheque of K150,000 to UNRE yesterday to kickstart the University’s involvement in its Crime Prevention Program.  Department of Justice & Attorney General (DJAG) Secretary Dr Eric Kwa presented the cheque to Vice-Chancellor Dr James Yoko, witnessed by senior members of the University and DJAG. In September last year, UNRE and DJAG signed a Memorandum of Understanding for UNRE’s Integrated Agricultural Training Program to be implemented throughout the country under DJAG’s Crime Prevention Mechanism Program to Empower Youths through Socio-Economic Development . The idea was initiated by former DJAG Acting Secretary, the late Dr Lawrence Kalinoe. Fourth year Fisheries students begin research proposals

FOURTH-YEAR Fisheries students are presently collecting and compiling data that will be used to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PNG UNRE and the people of Vurar Island.  This will be part of their research proposal that they will be assessed on.  The island has hosted students in the past for marine and fisheries field practicals.  Vuvar Island is a ten-minute boat ride from Tokunar Transit Lodge in Lungalunga, East New Britain.  Its surrounding pristine marine environment is an incredible natural living laboratory that Fisheries and Marine Resources students are privileged to use. Students must have good characters

This is according to the recruitment team of Hargy Oil Palm Limited who were at the University last Thursday and Friday to interview UNRE students for the company’s cadetship program and industrial training attachment.  Patrick Mangore, Group Manager Hargy Oil Palms Limited emphasised that apart from knowledge or  skills, it is important that students have good character, proper attitude, commitment; and be hardworking, honest and loyal. He said these things are not taught but are developed over time. Mr Mangore is a former student of the institution, who graduated with a Diploma in Tropical Agriculture in 1985. He has worked his way up to management level.
