Eastern Highlands Provincial Government to sponsor tertiary students

Eastern Highlands Province is one of the few provinces willing to support students taking up studies both in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
The announcement was made by Solomon Tato First Secretary to the Governor’s Office during his visit to UNRE on Wednesday.
Mr Tato told students that they will not go wrong studying Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry and other related courses because there is demand in the province as well as the country.
He said human resource capacity building is vital to the country’s development and Eastern Highlands Governor Honourable Peter Numu has made a commitment to support students to pursue their studies.
He said his visit was purposely to collect names of registered students and introduce to students the new education initiative the province will introduce next year.
Mr Tato commented that in the meantime Governor Numu has urged students to focus on their studies and to be the best ambassadors of the province.
He assured students that the Government has prioritised education and is willing to support Eastern Highlands students studying in all tertiary institutions in the country including students who are not from EHP but who have lived in the province for many years.
It was also good news for EHP students living in other provinces as the Provincial Government is willing to subsidise their school fees.
Apart from that, the province will also assist an individual who wished to do postgraduate studies overseas and on specialised fields, on the condition that the courses are not offered within PNG.
He told students that in order to be qualified for the assistance, students must register with the EHP Students Association and have their names submitted to the Governor’s office.
He stressed to students who fully paid their fees before the education subsidy that they are not allowed to get cash reimbursement from the Government funds, the funds can be forwarded for next year’s use or can be diverted to help a fellow student from the province.
EHP Student Association President Rocky Nome on behalf of the students thanked the Governor and his team for the continuous support and the new initiative that will benefit many unfortunate students.
