Staff and students donate to Kadovar Relief Appeal
University Vice Chancellor
Professor John Warren on behalf of the University presented the donated items
to acting Gazelle District Administrator Nicholas Baroro and his team on
Monday.
Professor Warren said when
the disaster appeal was launched, staff were willing to donate because they
felt a huge sympathy for the affected islanders of Kadovar in East Sepik.
He said this signified that
the people of PNG are generous and that giving is part of their culture.
The donation drive team was
led by Farm and Estate manager Alex Nugi and Nancy Galoko, sister in charge of
the University Clinic.
They collected clothing
items, pillows, mosquito nets, shoes and K401.25 in cash.
Receiving the donation, Mr
Baroro said it is now East New Britain’s turn to assist because the province
faced a similar situation during the 1994 twin volcanic eruptions and had
received generous assistance from the nation.
He thanked the University
community and said such cooperation strengthens the existing relationship the
District has with the institution.
The District has been very
supportive in providing funds and medical supplies to the University clinic.
The East New Britain
Kadovar Relief Appeal is an initiative of the provincial administration through
the provincial disaster office and is supported by the Sepik community in the
province.
Donation points have been
set up at the fire station in Kokopo town for Kokopo District, Balnataman LLG
for Rabaul District, Gazelle District office at Kerevat and Sinivit LLG for
Pomio District. The appeal was run for two weeks.
