ENB has potential to play competitive soccer

Not a lot of attention is given to soccer in East New Britain but the province has proven that it has the talent and potential to play competitive soccer.
These are the sentiments of PNG University of Natural Environment and Environment student, John Noddy.
Noddy who is a final year Fisheries and Marine Resource student, is also a semi-professional player.
He said ENB won the soccer title at the PNG Games in West New Britain last year, even though Morobe, Manus and Madang are known as the best soccer provinces in the country.
“This proves that East New Britain has some good talented soccer players who need someone to assist them develop the raw talents they have,” he said.
Noddy said he has no doubt that the support of Football Federation PNG (FFPNG), will bring soccer in East New Britain to a higher standard by producing players who can compete nationally.
He said the aim of FFPNG is to bring football to grassroots in rural and urban areas so that they can showcase their natural talents, hence encouraged students and youths to participate in FFPNG sanctioned competitions throughout the country, including the UNRE-Gazelle Football Association competition at the University, to develop their skills and talents.
He added that under FFPNG, there are programs involving under 17s and 15s that will train them to compete at a higher level.
Noddy became a semi-professional player when he was in Grade 11 and was paid for matches he played.
Therefore he encouraged young people to take an active interest in sports, particularly soccer.
“You don’t earn an income only when you find employment. If you do well in soccer, there is good money you can receive,” he said.
Professional soccer players are some of the highest paid athletes of any sports in the world. Their salaries typically exceed millions of dollars, pounds, yen and euro annually.
