President of Football Federation PNG John Kapi Natto yesterday launched the UNRE Gazelle Football Association at PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment.
The launch was witnessed by University Vice Chancellor Professor John Warren and senior officers of the university, a rep from Gazelle District Administration, students, staff and people from nearby surrounding communities.
Police Minister and Gazelle MP Jelta Wong who was not present due to his busy schedule conveyed his continuous support to the University through his district representative, Richard Periwanga.
Mr Periwanga said the presence of the District at the launching showed the District's commitment to the University.
Mr Kapi Natto said the idea to bring soccer into the districts and rural areas was to develop young people and give them opportunity and recognition.
“This must come with passion, a drive in your heart and not money. Everyone must take ownership of soccer,” he said.
He said over the last 20 to 30 years, soccer or any other sporting code had not reached urban and rural areas.
"Most national competition are only played in Port Moresby and Lae," he said.
Mr Kapi Natto told the people of Gazelle that the task is huge and as the president he travels to all districts, visiting associations and talking to them.
"In fact PNG is a country of diversified culture and is a sleeping giant in soccer. PNG is built for soccer,” he said.
He said FFPNG will take soccer to four regions under four conferences - New Guinea Islands Conference, Highlands, Northern and Southern. Associations registered to FFPNG will register under those conferences.
VC Professor Warren said football gives good attributes and teaches loyalty.
“I am proud of UNRE, proud of this association for the pleasure this is going to give so many people moving forward,” he said.
Student Representative Council (SRC) President Jasper Daun announced that the association is owned by the SRC. The student council had paid the association's registration fee with the aim of connecting people for a common purpose.
