Review of administrative systems currently underway at UNRE

The Kina-for-Kina (K4K) program, a collaboration by the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia to improve quality in higher education in PNG, is into its second phase at PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment.
This follows phase 1, which was an external audit of the University’s teaching quality assurance systems in May last year by three Australian academics.
This second phase, is a review of practices, procedures, policies and related documentation in all administrative sections of the University.
Australian academic Pauline Thambu who arrived at the University last month, is presently working closely with all section heads to understand the operation of each unit, its functions, systems and processes; and to ensure that each unit understands its role, responsibility and accountability.
The two reviews came about after an external academic audit conducted by a groups of academics from Australia and Papua New Guinea in 2013, identified a number of important areas that the University needed to improve.
Ms Thambu said the team that was involved in the first phase had found that under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Professor John Warren, the academic function of the University is doing well.
She said the administrative side, however, had not yet picked up, hence the second phase of the project.
It is expected that the Administrative Systems review will:
1. Support the development of effective administrative practices.
2. Document these practices in terms of policies, procedures and other related supporting documents.
3. Develop a system to centralize this documentation within the Policy Office.
Ms Thambu returns to Australia at the end of October this year. She is assisted by Josephine Lowe from the University’s Human Resource Office.
