Pomio students at PNG UNRE have been urged to excel in their studies
and return home to develop the district’s huge natural resources potential.
A team from Pomio district, who represented Pomio MP and Minister for
Public Service Elias Kapavore, visited the University today to pay school
fee subsidies for students from the district.
Deputy District Administrator John Liskia, executive officer Hillary
Songtava and district electoral office representation Lawrence Anton, presented
a cheque of K28,494 to for 13 students.

rep Malom Tamti, Students Representative Council President Jasper Daun and Pomio
students and staff witnessed the presentation.
Mr Liskia told students that the tough economic time the country is
going through, has also affected the District but it had tried its best to
maintain the support given to 314 students studying at various tertiary
institutions throughout the country.
He told students that the assistance came with the expectation that sponsored
students are committed in their study and graduate with good results.
He stressed that the people of Pomio wanted to see the students return
to help develop the huge landmass.
Mr Liskia also mentioned that the there is a huge potential for
fisheries development in Pomio and called on Fisheries and Marine Resources
students of UNRE to take the lead.
He said last year the district had begun working on improving better
road access for the people; while this year it had shifted its focus to
economic development.
“I believe PNG UNRE students are in better position to assist the
district with its focus,” he said.
Dr Pue thanked the Minister for coming forward to assist the students.
He said he has no doubt that the students are well equipped to go back
and help develop the district.
He assured the team that the students are equipped with knowledge and
skills on agriculture, fisheries, forestry, management and business and in the
near future, tourism, which will greatly benefit the district.
University Bursar Edward Laki said the presentation was timely as the
University would be calling on students and their sponsors to complete all
their fees.
On behalf of the 13 students, Leonard Ha-au acknowledged and thanked
the Minister for the assistance.
