UNRE to stage Champion Pig Competition

PNG UNRE is staging a Champion Pig Competition that is aimed at helping local pig farmers develop an appreciation for raising livestock.
This is the first time the University is staging such an event and entry is open to local farmers and organisations. To register farmers must pay K20/pig while organisations pay K100/pig.
Prizes are: K500 (first place); K300 (second place); K200 (third place).
The competition will also give farmers the opportunity to display the different breeds of pigs raised here in Papua New Guinea.
The competition will be centred on four activities. They are:
1. Pig performance. Live weight, body condition scoring, body conformity and alignment, etc.
2. Pig behaviour (positive response test). The farmer will demonstrate if his/her pig can respond to given signals.
3. DNA sampling from bristle samples.
4. Pig handling. Handlers will judged on their performance to control and present the pig to the judges.
The competition is open to all breeds and sexes.
Below are the selection criteria.
  • The selected pig
~ must be 6 months old by October 2018. This means the pig must be born between April 1 and 16, 2018.
~ must be clean and free of mud.
~ must be tamed and well behaved.
~ must be healthy with no obvious problems.
   • The farmer/handler must be well groomed and neat when showing his/her pig. Wear clean clothes in the ring.
Judging will take place at the University's Vudal campus in October at the annual World Food Day Field Day event. The decision of the judges is final.
Organisers of the competition hope that working with animals, being responsible for their care, health and growth, and exhibiting them in a competitive environment will motivate farmers and enable them to see the value of raising livestock.
