UNRE commemorates World Environment Day

PNG University of National Resources and Environment commemorated World Environment Day (WED) yesterday with different activities.
The students divided themselves into two groups: the first group led by Students Representative Council (SRC) President Jasper Daun did a clean-up and public awareness; while the second group led by former SRC President Florian Pai conducted awareness at primary schools.
With the 2018 WED theme being “Beat Plastic Pollution” the first group did a clean-up, picking plastics at the University campus and Kerevat town. They also conducted awareness on how plastics have affected or polluted the environment. Head of University Library and Information Communication Technology Russell Deka who initiated the activity also participated.
Speaking to the Kerevat community, Mr Daun said it is important that they must look after the environment so that the environment can in return, look after them and their children in the years to come.
“Plastics have polluted the environment including the sea, beaches and land,” he said.
“A large number of plastics are floating in the ocean or the sea and has affected the marine population. For instance: fish sometimes mistake plastic for food.”
The community responded well and shops in the area donated soft drinks and water to the students as a token of appreciation.

Mr Pai who led the second team said the four schools they visited, UNRE Honeybee Play and Elementary school, Vudal Primary School, Vunapalading Primary School and Kerevat Integrated School responded well to their presentations.
The team explained the word ‘environment’, explained the importance of the environment, the 2018 World Environment Day theme, the major causes affecting the environment and how individuals can contribute to taking looking after the environment.
Mr Pai said from their observation only Honeybee School was aware of the day and its theme.
He said it is sad to see that schools are not seeing the importance of environment and there is still a missing link to vital information where teachers have failed to update themselves with latest information to educate their students.
He thanked the schools for accepting their request to speak to the students.

UNRE launches Cocoa and Goat Integration Manual

The event, which was held last month was attended by university staff; representatives from NARI, NAQIA and PNG Cocoa Board; James Butubu Area Manager ACIAR Bougainville; and acting Pro Vice Chancellor Academic and Research Mr Peter Navus. UNRE takes back UNRE Popondetta

Oro Provincial Administration staff with UNRE officers. PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment will resume offering its Academic Programs at PNG UNRE Popondetta Campus in Oro Province next year (2021). This follows a decision by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST). Last week UNRE Chancellor Professor Kenneth Sumbuk and acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor Planning and Development Dr Francis Essacu, with senior staff from UNRE Popondetta Campus met with Oro Provincial Administrator Trevor Magei and executive members from the Office of Governor Garry Juffa to discuss the latest development of Popondetta Campus.
