UNRE's research on Kamerere propagation techniques progressing well

RESEARCH work on the improvement of propagation techniques of Eucalyptus deglupta (Kamerere) is progressing well after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding recently.
Open Bay Timber Ltd, a subsidiary of the Sumitomo Forestry Group Ltd (Tokyo, Japan) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University in September purposely for the University through its Forestry Department to assist the company with the research and propagation of Eucalyptus deglupta and the growing and delivery of Eaglewood (Gyrinops sp).
Dr Satoshi Kita from the Sumitomo Forestry in Japan signed on behalf of the company while Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Dr Aisak Pue signed on behalf of the University.
According to the project coordinator, Sylvester Kulang, the first trial on propagation techniques of Eucalyptus deglupta (Kamerere) commenced last month.
Eucalyptus deglupta cuttings were trialled using coir (fibre from the outer husk of the coconut) and top soil as the growing medium and propagated in a non-misting unit.
Observation was done frequently to monitor the development of epicormics and roots.
Mr Kulang said the first trial is about 70% complete. Propagating cuttings have developed epicormics and roots.
There will be three trials conducted.
The trial of Eaglewood propagation using coco peat and rice husks as a growing medium is also progressing.
The project is for two years but is subject to amendment. It is comprised of four principle objectives, being:
1. The experimental development of best practice for the propagation of Kamerere (Eucalyptus deglupta) from cuttings;
2. The production of a best practice guide and delivery of training for staff of Open Bay Timber Ltd;
3. The growing for direct distribution to Open Bay Timber Ltd of 100 seedlings of Eaglewood (Gyrinops sp); and
4. The development of nursery facilities appropriate to the project.
Mr Kulang established the Eucalyptus deglupta (Kamerere) seed garden five months ago to use for the project.
