Acting Chancellor welcomes new students
UNRE Acting Chancellor Dr. Andrew Masta |
UNRE acting
Chancellor welcomed new students on behalf of the University Council and urged
them to concentrate on their studies, respect their fellow students and the
University’s rules and regulations.
Acting
Chancellor Dr Andrew Masta told students during the 2020 Student Orientation Welcome
on Monday (Feb 24) that they must consider themselves as privileged to be selected to a
University.
He said
students must also be considerate of their parents’ efforts and should do their best
in their studies.
Dr Masta cautioned that all universities and institutions are governed by rules and regulations which
means that students are expected to adhere to those regulations.
He said alcohol consumption is a major challenge in all institutions and
universities including UNRE and warned students that UNRE will not tolerate
such behaviours as it has a Zero Tolerance of Alcohol policy on campus. This
means students caught will be dealt with severe penalty.
“Anything
(that) comes to Council regarding student’s behaviour
as a result of alcohol consumption, you are going
to be terminated from this University,” he stressed, adding that such behaviours also affect other students whose parents
have invested in them and expect them to get the best education.
Dr
Masta said apart from acquiring knowledge and skills, students must also look
for opportunities to interact with other people and organisations and to be
innovative to create employment for themselves and others.
He
said the University had increased the number of programs because of this need, which
Is
why the student intake had also increased.
He
said UNRE trains students to become self-reliant, innovative,
entrepreneurs and to create employment after graduating because it was aware
that not all students would find employment.
The
students were also challenged to understand that their priority at UNRE is to
obtain an education and if they encountered any issues, there are procedures in
place that they can use to raise their concerns instead of boycotting classes
or going on strike.
In
congratulating the new students, Dr Masta said they had made the right choice
to study at UNRE.
“PNG
is blessed with all the natural resources and this is what UNRE is all about,”
he said.
