PNG University of Natural Resource and Environment has renewed its partnership with Telikom PNG to assist the University achieve its expansion plan.

UNRE Vice-Chancellor Dr Pongie Kichawen said with the limited infrastructure available at the University, it could not meet the target of producing 1,000 graduates annually, therefore it is looking at using Information Communication Technology services to deliver academic programs to its students.

He said the University looked to Telikom PNG to help achieve this objective because it has cheaper rates. The University will be using its (Telikom) services to expand its academic programmes.

“For me the most important indicator to say that a university is big as such, it has to be students’ enrolment and this is where the mass education can come in.

“This is a small university in terms of its physical appearance and if we can get many students enrolling into our programmes and they can be using ICT to advance their education, I think this where UNRE can become a huge university,” said Dr Kichawen.

Acting Chancellor of the University, Dr Andrew Masta who was also present said information is critical to learning.

He thanked the Vice-Chancellor for addressing the issue of ICT which was a concern for students and staff at the University for a long time.

Dr Masta acknowledged and thanked Telikom for the partnership.

Telikom PNG Chief Executive Officer Xavier Victor thanked the University for having confidence in Telikom and reviving the partnership.

He said Telikom is owned by Government of PNG and has a 100% Papua New Guinean staff workforce.

Mr Victor said once the Coral Sea Cable System which has reached East New Britain is switched on, it will deliver faster, cheaper internet services and will completely change the service.

“That’s a better and bigger highway that is coming through, more people wanting to go online will have the benefit,” said the CEO.

He assured the University that Telikom PNG will continue the partnership to provide services requested and required by UNRE.

The occasion which took place on June 5 at the University's Vudal Campus, was witnessed by Telikom PNG’s NGI Regional Business Manager, Voda Vilik.

As of June 2, 2020, the University’s internet service is being provided by Telikom PNG.
