2021 SRC focuses on quality education
QUALITY Education is the focus of the 2021 PNG UNRE Student Representative Council and the body is doing everything possible to achieve this.
UNRE SRC President James Waikila said, therefore, the SRC has come up with some effective programs to help students to see what is required by industries.
One of the approaches is an Internal Career Expo where Bridging students will be invited to give career talk to students.
“We will invite our Bridging students to share their work experiences and market the industries they are working for,” he said.
The Expo is scheduled for next Saturday (22 May 2021) starting at 7pm at Ruthley Hall.
The SRC is also putting together educational and spiritual programs that will help change the mindsets of students.
“We want our students to be in demand after graduating from this University and if this is not happening then something is wrong and all of us need to address this,” he said.
He requested the University Administration to consider recruiting qualified lecturers and tutors who have graduated with merit and are well experienced in the courses they are delivering.
The president commended the University for engaging guest lecturers and tutors to deliver to students.
For instance, John Duigu, Director of John Duigu & Associates Ltd, was recently engaged under the Entrepreneur Module to speak to Year 4 students; and the Forestry Department under the leadership of Dr Francis Essacu has engaged an experienced forester and lecturer, as guest lecturer.
Year 1 Forestry students are privileged to be taught by Mr Peter Amatus because he is one of those who contributed to writing Forestry Policies, one of the topics the students are studying.
Year 2 students were also fortunate to have Mrs Fredah Wallum as guest lecturer on the topic Communicating Occupational Health and Safety messages.
The SRC president said many students expressed their satisfaction with such engagements.
He also said it be good to see the University excel to new heights with Ph.D. holders and Professors at the helm of Academic Schools and Departments.
The young leader also requested the Administration to extend Industrial Training for Year 3 students from three months to six months.
He said this will give them ample time to complete their research projects.
Young Waikila said quality is everyone’s concern and the SRC is playing its part to come up with effective programs to help the University produce quality students.
