THE Taiwan Embassy in Papua New Guinea recently donated various Taiwan vegetable seeds to PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment.
The seeds were handed to Dr Caleb Manamik Breria of the University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) during his visit as an alumni of the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan.
Dr Breria paid a courtesy call on Taiwan Ambassador His Excellency Oliver Liao in Port Moresby two weeks ago after visiting the University’s Popondetta campus.
During the visit they discussed how to promote agricultural cooperation between Taiwan and PNG and Ambassador Liao also handed the Taiwan vegetable seeds to Dr. Breria who delivered them to the University’s Agriculture Department.
In a letter to Ambassador Liao, acting Dean of the School of Natural Resources and Head of the Agriculture Department, Peter Navus, thanked the Ambassador for the donation.
“PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment acknowledges the contribution by the Taiwan ICDF Mission in Papua New Guinea. Particularly, in the areas of agriculture extension, farmers’ training programs and higher degrees’ programs offered by the government and the people of Taiwan,” he said.
Mr Navus said the Department is grateful that Dr Calab Breria, PNG’s first Ph.D. graduate from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology is an academic at UNRE.
He also informed the Ambassador that the University is now in dialogue with National Pingtung University of Science and Technology for further collaboration in research and training.
This strengthens recent calls by Pro VC Planning and Development, Dr Livingstone Tavul, for those completing PhD studies to continue dialogue with the universities they studied at for postdoctoral collaborations in terms of research and other benefits for the betterment of their institutions and the country.
Meanwhile, the University is in discussion with New Guinea Binatang Research Centre (NGBRC) for a joint collaboration in mutual scientific areas of research, training and extension development targeting agriculture, environment and others.
The University is working on a Memorandum of Understanding that is expected to be signed by the two institutions next month.
